President Bola Tinubu visited Maiduguri on September 16, 2024, to express sympathy and offer support to the victims of recent devastating floods in Borno State. During his visit, Tinubu, accompanied by Governor Babagana Zulum, met with local leaders, including the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn El-Kanemi.
The floods have caused severe damage in the region, claiming at least 37 lives, displacing approximately one million people, and destroying property worth millions of naira. The President acknowledged the gravity of the disaster and committed to assisting with the rehabilitation of affected areas and supporting rescue operations.
Tinubu highlighted the federal government’s dedication to addressing the crisis, stating, “We will help Borno State. It is our problem not just your problem, we must share in each other’s pains.” He emphasized the need for collective efforts to tackle environmental issues and climate change.
The Shehu of Borno and Governor Zulum expressed gratitude for the President’s visit and support. The Shehu requested that the government investigate the root causes of the flooding to prevent future occurrences, noting that Maiduguri had never experienced such a severe disaster before.
Governor Zulum praised Tinubu for prioritizing the visit and showing solidarity with the people of Borno, reinforcing the commitment to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the floods.
The federal government’s intervention aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected and aid in the recovery process for the region.
