Ademola Lookman Responds to Harsh Criticism from Atalanta Coach Gian Piero Gasperini
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has broken his silence following sharp criticism from Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini after the club’s exit from the UEFA Champions League.
The aftermath of Atalanta’s elimination has sparked debate across the football world, particularly over Gasperini’s public remarks about Lookman’s missed penalty. The Nigerian international, who has been one of Africa’s standout players, expressed his disappointment over his coach’s decision to single him out in the post-match press conference.
Gasperini’s Controversial Statement
Following the team’s exit, Gasperini did not hold back in his criticism of Lookman, calling him “one of the worst penalty-takers” he has ever seen. The Italian coach was displeased that Lookman took the crucial spot-kick despite the presence of Atalanta’s designated penalty takers.
“Lookman wasn’t supposed to take the penalty. He’s one of the worst penalty-takers I’ve ever seen. Even in training, he has a very low percentage. He kicks them really badly. He wanted to take the penalty after scoring a goal. He took the ball despite [Mateo] Retegui and [Charles] De Ketelaere being available to take it. I didn’t like what Lookman did,” Gasperini stated.
Lookman’s Response
Lookman took to social media to address the situation, expressing deep disappointment in how he was publicly criticized despite his dedication to the club.
“It saddens me on a day like this to have to write this statement – most of all because of what we have achieved together as a team and as a city. Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.”
The forward further clarified that he took the penalty based on instructions from the designated taker at that moment.
“During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty; and to support the team, I took responsibility in the moment to do so. Life’s about challenges and turning pain into power, which I’ll continue to do,” Lookman concluded.
Atalanta’s Focus Shifts to Serie A
With their Champions League journey over, Atalanta will now turn their attention to Serie A, where they aim to secure a top-four finish and qualification for next season’s Champions League.
