The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fired back at the former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, following his recent comments that the PDP is “dead.”
In a statement issued by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party dismissed Kwankwaso’s remarks, describing him as an “inconsequential figure” in Nigeria’s political landscape. The PDP’s response came after Kwankwaso declared that he and his supporters left the PDP because it had become irrelevant.
Ologunagba argued that Kwankwaso’s leadership of the NNPP, a party struggling to maintain control of just one state, contrasts sharply with the PDP’s significant influence. He noted that the PDP currently governs 13 states and has numerous lawmakers at both the national and state levels.
“It is unimaginable for a failed and inconsequential politician with control over just one state to declare a party with 13 governors, many Senators, House of Representatives members, and a strong presence across all local governments in Nigeria as ‘dead,'” Ologunagba stated.
The PDP spokesperson also criticized Kwankwaso for what he called “selfishness and self-centeredness,” suggesting that these traits disqualify him as a true leader in Nigerian politics.
The verbal exchange between the two political figures underscores the continued rivalry between Nigeria’s political parties as they prepare for future elections.
