Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed strong disapproval of Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s recent disparaging remarks about Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his wife, Betsy. Oshiomhole’s comments have sparked significant controversy and criticism.
The controversy began when Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State and a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), responded to a comment made by Betsy Obaseki during a PDP campaign event. In her speech at the flag-off of the PDP’s campaign at Ubiaja Township Stadium in Esan South-East Local Government Area, Mrs. Obaseki highlighted the fact that among the gubernatorial candidates, only one, Asue Ighodalo, had a wife, suggesting that this was an advantage for women in Edo State.
In his response, Oshiomhole criticized Mrs. Obaseki’s remarks by referring to her and her husband as childless, stating that they had no right to comment on others’ marital statuses given their personal circumstances. His comments were seen as a personal attack and drew widespread criticism for being insensitive and irrelevant to the political discourse.
Dele Momodu took to Instagram to voice his discontent with Oshiomhole’s statements. He described himself as “shocked and mortified” by the level of the remarks and called for a public apology from the former governor. Momodu expressed his dismay at Oshiomhole’s decision to delve into personal matters rather than focusing on political issues.
In his post, Momodu wrote, “My very dear Egbon Comrade ADAMS, Sir, I have watched this video endlessly and to say I’m shocked and mortified at how low you sank is to put it mildly. I pray you will find the courage to apologise publicly for this horrendous tantrum. It is never a crime to be childless. You could easily have said your candidate has a wife and children and leave it there but you went too far in this diatribe. Is it more than POLITICS?!!”
Momodu’s reaction reflects a growing concern among political observers and the public about the direction of political discourse in Nigeria, where personal attacks and inflammatory comments have become increasingly common.
As the political climate heats up ahead of the upcoming Edo State governorship election, both parties are expected to continue their campaigns amid a backdrop of heightened scrutiny and public debate.
