Sam Olumekun, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), addressed the INEC Press Corps on preparations for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, emphasizing the commission’s efforts to combat fake and misleading news.
Olumekun highlighted the significant risks posed by false information during election periods, noting that such news can disrupt the electoral process, undermine public trust, and incite unnecessary tensions.
“In this digital age, we are acutely aware of the dangers posed by fake and misleading news, especially during an election period. Such information has the potential to disrupt the electoral process, undermine public confidence, and incite unnecessary tensions,” he stated.
To address these concerns, INEC has implemented several measures to ensure transparency and provide accurate information to the public. This includes regular updates and open communication channels to counter misinformation.
“We have made it a culture to constantly update the public through you after every Commission’s meeting when decisions are taken. We will intensify the information flow as we move closer to the Edo governorship election,” Olumekun added.
The commission also called on the media and the public to play an active role in verifying information before dissemination. INEC urged that any election-related information should be confirmed directly with the Commission to prevent the spread of falsehoods.
“Measures have been put in place to minimize circulation of false information. However, we cannot do this alone. We believe that you will remain a bulwark against fake and misleading information about the Commission and the electoral process. Our doors are open for any inquiries, and we have established multiple channels through which the public can reach us for accurate information,” Olumekun urged.
Assuring the public of a fair and transparent election, Olumekun emphasized INEC’s commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity. He noted that the Commission has intensified engagement with stakeholders and continued voter education efforts to ensure a credible election process.
“The Commission has left no stone unturned in its efforts to guarantee that this election will be conducted with the highest standards of integrity. We have intensified our engagement with stakeholders at State and Local Government levels, while voter education is still ongoing at all levels,” he concluded.
