Abia State Government Issues Warning Over School Resumption Dates
The Abia State Government has reiterated the September 23, 2024, resumption date for the 2024/2025 academic session, cautioning that any schools that reopen before this deadline will face penalties.
Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, conveyed this warning during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. Kanu expressed disappointment that some schools had resumed classes ahead of the mandated date.
“Despite the directive from the Ministry of Education, some schools reopened prematurely. As we undertake reforms in the education sector, it is crucial to maintain strict regulatory oversight. Principals who have ignored this directive and resumed operations early will be subject to sanctions,” Kanu said.
The Commissioner also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to recover schools that have been taken over by private entities and organizations. He called on local communities, traditional rulers, and youth groups to safeguard government properties within their areas, emphasizing that significant investments are made in infrastructure for public benefit.
“The government urges all stakeholders to protect these assets. We cannot allow individuals to undermine the infrastructure developed for community use,” Kanu added.
