Gov Otti Approves Upgrade of Abia Specialist Hospital

UMUAHIA – Governor Alex Otti has sanctioned a comprehensive upgrade and retrofitting of Abia Specialist Hospital in Umuahia and Amachara General Hospital, aiming to transform them into world-class medical facilities.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a briefing on the outcomes of the latest Executive Council meeting. This initiative is part of the Governor’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality healthcare for residents of Abia State.

Enhancing Medical Services and Expanding Capacity

The upgrade is set to enhance the hospitals’ ability to offer a wider range of high-quality medical services. According to Kanu, the improved facilities will specialize in various areas, including internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, surgical services, and brain and spine surgeries. The Governor has not only approved the necessary funding for these projects but has also set a strict timeline, directing that the upgrades be completed within 13 to 15 weeks.

Additionally, approval has been granted for the upgrade of the Diagnostic Center, which will now provide comprehensive diagnostic and surgical services across all specialties.

Transforming Abia into a Health Tourism Hub

Governor Otti is focused on turning Abia into a hub for health tourism within Nigeria by significantly enhancing the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Supporting this vision, Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, emphasized that the overhaul of Abia Specialist Hospital and Amachara General Hospital is designed to elevate these institutions to centers of excellence in various medical specialties.

The upgrades will not only improve existing facilities but also introduce state-of-the-art equipment and services. Professor Uche revealed that the State Government has also allocated funds to recruit top-tier specialists across different medical fields, ensuring that the people of Abia receive the highest quality healthcare services.

In the coming days and weeks, the effects of these upgrades and the expansion of services will begin to take shape, marking a significant step forward in the state’s healthcare landscape.
