Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has voiced serious concerns about the escalating insecurity in Northern Nigeria, highlighting its detrimental effects on agriculture, education, and health across the region. Sambo, speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the League of Northern Democrats, expressed his support for the group as a potential solution to these pressing issues.
Sambo described the current situation as deeply troubling, noting how insecurity is driving farmers away from their lands and negatively impacting the well-being of families, particularly in terms of education and health. He emphasized that these challenges are exacerbating poverty and inequality in the North and across Nigeria.
The League of Northern Democrats, led by former Kano State Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, recently visited Sambo at his Abuja residence. Sambo endorsed the league’s efforts and urged its members to focus on addressing the region’s needs while fostering peace and socio-economic development. He stressed the importance of leveraging collective experiences and resources to meet the aspirations of the people.
In a related development, former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau also expressed his concerns about the worsening conditions in Northern Nigeria. In a letter to the League’s convener, Dambazau highlighted issues such as insecurity, banditry, illiteracy, poverty, and drug abuse, calling for urgent and coordinated action. He commended the League’s commitment and pledged to support its initiatives.
The League of Northern Democrats, founded by elder statesman Umar Ardo, is set to hold a significant summit in Kaduna in October, with Vice President Kashim Shettima expected to attend. The league aims to address critical regional challenges and is positioned as a non-partisan, non-ethnic, and non-religious initiative focused on improving the North’s socio-economic conditions.
Ardo emphasized that the league’s purpose is to assist the government in tackling major issues such as insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and drug addiction among the youth, without aligning with any specific political party or group.
