Edo State governorship candidate for the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Olumide Akpata, has vowed to address flooding issues in Benin City and across the state if elected. Speaking at a town hall meeting with Edo residents in the United States, Akpata highlighted the necessity of collaborating with the Diaspora for the state’s development.
Diaspora Engagement
Akpata emphasized the importance of leveraging the expertise and resources of the Edo Diaspora. He assured that his administration would localize the Diaspora Commission Law to foster a stronger partnership between the state government and Edo people living abroad. “Edo State will thrive if we harness the potential of our Diaspora. They are integral to our progress, and my government will work closely with them,” he said.
Campaign Experience
Reflecting on his campaign efforts, Akpata claimed he has been more active on the ground than other candidates, traversing all 18 local government areas of the state. He noted the poor condition of roads and the challenges faced in reaching the people, contrasting his approach with the use of helicopters by the current governor. “I chose to experience the people’s reality firsthand, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Akpata added.
Addressing Flooding
Akpata also addressed the pressing issue of flooding in Edo State, particularly in Benin City. He criticized the lack of effective drainage systems and highlighted areas severely affected by floods. “Flooding is a persistent problem, even in affluent areas like the Government Reservation Area (GRA) and Ugbor. The situation is dire, with roads turning into rivers after just one hour of rain,” he said.
He pointed to successful drainage solutions implemented in neighboring Delta State as a model for Edo. “Delta State faced similar issues but tackled them with a storm water project. Edo needs a deliberate and expert-driven approach to fix our drainage system,” Akpata said. He also stressed the need for public awareness and proper waste management to address the issue effectively.
Akpata’s promises reflect a commitment to addressing both immediate infrastructure concerns and long-term developmental goals for Edo State.
