Benin City, Nigeria – The Obidient Movement Network (OMNET), a prominent faction of supporters for Peter Obi’s presidency, has officially endorsed Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the upcoming Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21.
The announcement was made by the group’s leader and Chairman of the Edo State Obidient Movement, Comrade Simpa Jerry Afadama. The endorsement follows a thorough evaluation of the political landscape in Edo State. According to Afadama, the decision was also supported by other key figures within the movement, including Engr. Emmanuel Irhebhude, OMNET’s Secretary General, and other state executive members.
“OMNET is dedicated to the principles of good governance, including competency, equity, capacity, and character,” Afadama said. “After careful consideration, we believe Asue Ighodalo embodies these essential qualities and is the most suitable candidate to lead Edo State.”
In contrast, OMNET has expressed significant concerns regarding the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata. The group criticized Akpata for alleged deficiencies in people management and purported connections to the All Progressives Congress (APC). They also voiced concerns over the integrity of the LP primary election process, alleging financial inducements and potential corruption.
“OMNET views the alleged financial inducements in the LP primary as a troubling sign of potential corruption and lack of transparency,” Afadama stated.
The group also dismissed the candidacy of Monday Okpebolo from the APC, citing worries about his educational background and communication skills. OMNET questioned Okpebolo’s ability to govern effectively and expressed concerns that his leadership could exacerbate issues such as political thuggery and governance decline, which they attribute to the APC’s historical performance.
“The movement is urging all supporters of good governance in Edo State to unite behind Asue Ighodalo in the forthcoming election,” Afadama added. “We are confident that he is the candidate capable of driving the state towards greater progress and development.”
