The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, announced $6 million in funding from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund to aid flood victims in Borno State. The floods were caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam on September 10, displacing hundreds of thousands and severely affecting the region.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric reported that a joint mission, including UN agencies, NGOs, and the Nigeria Red Cross Society, has been providing essential services such as hot meals, water, sanitation, and health care. The World Food Programme (WFP) has also set up soup kitchens to support the displaced population in various camps.
The floods have exacerbated existing challenges in Borno State, already struggling with conflict and food insecurity. The response aims to address immediate needs and support long-term recovery efforts.
