The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Mr. Godgift Bai, in connection with the circulation of a nude video of his ex-girlfriend across various social media platforms.
The arrest followed a thorough investigation by the Cyber Crime Unit of the Bayelsa State Police Command, prompted by a directive from the Commissioner of Police, CP Alonyenu Francis Idu. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Musa Mohammed, the Public Relations Officer for the Command, confirmed the details in a statement on Friday.
The incident began when Bai’s ex-girlfriend, a 20-year-old undergraduate, loaned him N30,000 between August 9 and 16, 2024. Bai initially promised to repay the loan but later failed to do so. After the woman involved the police, Bai eventually returned the money. However, he reportedly retaliated by sending her nude videos to bloggers for distribution on social media.
ASP Mohammed condemned Bai’s actions, stating, “The Command strongly disapproves of cyberstalking, particularly when it targets vulnerable individuals. We remain committed to combating such offenses and ensuring justice for victims.”
The police have emphasized their dedication to addressing online exploitation and related crimes. The investigation is ongoing, and Bai is expected to face charges in court.
The Bayelsa State Police Command has also urged the public to avoid engaging in or promoting online exploitation and harassment.
