Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, by three years. According to a source who spoke with Daily Trust, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, delivered the letter of extension to Egbetokun on Monday.
Egbetokun, who was appointed as IGP in June 2023, was originally set to retire on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, as he reaches the age of 60 tomorrow. The extension, if confirmed, would allow him to remain in office beyond the mandatory retirement age.
However, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, speaking with TVC on Monday evening, stated that he could not confirm the extension of Egbetokun’s tenure. Adejobi explained that the announcement of any extension would come from the President, as the IGP does not have the authority to extend his tenure or announce such a decision. He advised that inquiries regarding the extension be directed to the federal government.
The potential extension comes shortly after the Senate passed an amendment to the Police Act 2020 on July 23, which introduced a new clause under Section 8. This clause mandates that public servants retire after 35 years of service or upon reaching the age of 60. However, the amendment also allows police officers to serve for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.
