Residents of Kano are experiencing a new surge in fuel prices, with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, reaching ₦1,200 per litre at several filling stations across the city. This increase comes as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has adjusted its pump prices to ₦904 per litre.
According to Daily Trust, the sudden spike in fuel prices has led to long queues at NNPCL stations, as customers rush to fill their tanks before the new prices take full effect. An official at one of the NNPCL stations, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that they were waiting for further instructions on when to implement the updated prices.
The dramatic rise in fuel costs has added to the financial strain on Kano residents, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. There are growing concerns about how this increase will affect transportation costs and the prices of goods and services, which are expected to rise as a result.
One station employee remarked, “We arrived this morning and discovered the price adjustment. We are currently awaiting directives on when to start selling at the new rate.”
Motorists have voiced their frustration over the situation. Isah Muhammad expressed his concerns, saying, “Where are we heading to in this country? How are we supposed to manage now? It’s very unfortunate that we are witnessing this.”
Another motorist, Ibrahim Saleh, reminisced about past fuel prices, noting, “I remember when I used to sell petrol black market at ₦95. During the late President Shehu Musa Yar’adua’s regime, we anticipated a price increase but were surprised when the price was adjusted to ₦65. Since then, prices have only gone up and never come down in Nigeria.”
The ongoing price hikes highlight the growing economic challenges faced by many Nigerians, underscoring the need for sustainable solutions to address the rising cost of living.
