The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning regarding the gradual release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. The announcement was made by NIHSA Director General Umar Mohammed on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
According to the statement, the dam will begin releasing water at a rate of 100 cubic meters per second (8,640,000 cubic meters per day), with the flow potentially increasing to 1,000 cubic meters per second over the next week. This release is being managed to prevent exceeding the Benue River’s capacity and causing major flooding downstream in Nigeria.
While no significant flooding is expected, Mohammed emphasized the need for preparedness in states along the Benue River system, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, and Rivers. He urged all levels of government to enhance vigilance and readiness to mitigate any potential impacts.
The NIHSA will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates on water levels to prevent potential flood disasters.
