The Nigerian government has refuted claims of exploitation in its relationship with China, affirming that the country is fully aware of its goals in the partnership. Speaking during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in China, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Maitama Tuggar emphasized that Nigeria is focused on adding value to its resources, creating jobs, and exporting finished products rather than merely exporting raw materials.
Tuggar highlighted that Nigeria is seeking strategic partnerships with nations, including China, that align with its developmental objectives. He stated, “We know exactly what we want… We want to manufacture and export finished products to countries like China.”
The Minister further dismissed any suggestion that Nigeria is being exploited, asserting that the country is operating from a position of strategic autonomy and maturity in its international dealings.
