The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has made a formal appeal to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) regarding ongoing issues that are preventing Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates from participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. This appeal was presented on Friday during a visit by NAPS President, Mr. Ridwan Opeyemi, and a delegation to JAMB Headquarters in Bwari, Abuja.
The primary concern raised by Opeyemi and his team is the irregularities faced by HND graduates who have completed their studies at various polytechnics but are experiencing difficulties with NYSC mobilization. Opeyemi explained that despite these graduates having regularized their status with JAMB, they are still being excluded from the NYSC mobilization process. This issue has created a significant backlog and frustration among graduates who are eager to serve their country as part of the NYSC program.
In a meeting with the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, Opeyemi and his delegation were informed about the complexities of the issue. Prof. Oloyede clarified that JAMB’s role is limited to the admission of National Diploma (ND) students and does not extend to the management or data of HND graduates. Consequently, JAMB lacks the necessary data to facilitate the inclusion of HND graduates into the NYSC scheme.
The Registrar advised the NAPS team to consult the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for further assistance. Prof. Oloyede emphasized that while JAMB oversees the admissions for ND programs, the NBTE is responsible for the management of HND programs and would be better positioned to address the mobilization issues.
Opeyemi expressed his dissatisfaction with the current process and highlighted the urgent need for JAMB’s intervention. He emphasized that the situation has left many students in limbo, unable to proceed with their mandatory national service. The NAPS President urged both JAMB and the NBTE to collaborate and develop a solution that will streamline the mobilization process and ensure that HND graduates are not left out.
The visit and appeal come amid growing concerns about the bureaucratic hurdles faced by polytechnic graduates. The NAPS team hopes that with JAMB’s support and guidance, a clear path can be established to resolve these issues and ensure that all eligible graduates can participate in the NYSC scheme without further delays.
In conclusion, while JAMB has expressed its willingness to assist, the responsibility for addressing the mobilization issues for HND graduates ultimately rests with the NBTE. NAPS remains hopeful that through continued dialogue and collaboration with relevant bodies, a resolution will be reached to facilitate the seamless integration of HND graduates into the NYSC program.
