The Lagos State Government has reopened the Ojota and Maryland sections of the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge, following rehabilitation efforts. Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, during the reopening, announced a zero-tolerance policy for vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, particularly targeting the frequent theft of manhole covers.
To address the issue, the state has replaced steel manhole covers with fibre alternatives, which are more difficult to remove and have no resale value. Hamzat emphasized that those caught stealing these covers would face prosecution. The state is committed to maintaining infrastructure, improving road and bridge conditions, and enhancing safety by protecting public facilities from vandalism.
The newly reopened bridge, which had been closed for months, is expected to ease traffic and reduce travel time for commuters. The government also emphasized its focus on maintaining pedestrian bridges and preventing environmental hazards like flooding caused by the removal of manholes and improper waste disposal.
