A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State, led by Yakubu Lado, held a congress on Saturday at the state party secretariat to elect new officials. The congress resulted in Nura Kurfi being elected as the new chairman of the PDP in the state.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Congress, Ilu Bello, who noted that the election, which covered 39 positions including state, zonal, and local government officials, was witnessed by a representative from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Amadi, pledged to restore and strengthen the party’s structure, expressing confidence in the new leadership. “We will amend all broken walls in PDP as we take over the mantle of leadership today. We will take over the state in the 2027 general election, God willing,” Amadi declared.
However, the congress was marked by the absence of significant stakeholders within the party, including House of Representatives member Salisu Majigiri, Senator Ibrahim Tsauri, and Dr. Mustapha Inuwa. These figures, who are associated with the Atiku/Lado 2023 campaign and have been prominent in the party’s activities, reportedly did not support the Lado faction.
A source close to the situation revealed that the absent stakeholders were aligned with Mustapha Inuwa rather than the Lado team. “We are not part of the Lado team. This was why we did not show up at the venue. We are not from their camp. We belong to Mustapha Inuwa,” the source said.
The election of new officials in this faction of the PDP comes amid ongoing internal disputes and power struggles within the party, reflecting broader challenges within Katsina’s political landscape as the party prepares for future elections.
