The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the signing of the Peace Accord for the Edo governorship election on September 12, 2024, in Benin City. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, announced this during an extraordinary meeting with political parties in Abuja.
Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, Chairman of the National Peace Committee, will oversee the signing ceremony. This early scheduling aims to allow the Peace Committee to monitor compliance with the accord well before the election, adding more weight to the process.
Yakubu emphasized the need for political parties to maintain civility in their campaigns and adhere to INEC’s regulations. He also noted that no party had yet submitted the dates and locations of their major rallies and processions.
Regarding logistical preparations, Yakubu stated that INEC has completed training for security personnel and is finalizing the delivery of non-sensitive materials. Additionally, arrangements with transport unions for logistics are being concluded, and the printing of voters’ registers for all 4,519 polling units in Edo State is nearly finished.
