FRSC Unfazed by NANS Threats Over Fake Number Plate Impoundment
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has made it clear that it will not be deterred by threats issued by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) concerning the ongoing impoundment of vehicles with fake number plates.
In a statement released by FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, and shared by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC emphasized its commitment to ensuring road safety and security for all road users. The Corps stated that it would continue to carry out its statutory duties without fear or favor.
Malam Mohammed reiterated that the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) is vital for maintaining security and integrity in the country. He expressed that the special operation to curb the use of fake number plates, which had been prompted by the increasing abuse of Nigerian number plates by both organizations and individuals, was crucial for the nation’s safety.
The Corps Marshal noted that the threat from NANS, which allegedly called for the shutdown of any FRSC command that impounds vehicles, will not sway the FRSC from carrying out its responsibilities. He underscored that the rise in forged and duplicated number plates had led to growing concerns about security, as vehicle-related crimes are a significant issue in the country.
The operation aims to maintain uniformity in vehicle registration, improve security, and ensure proper data storage and retrieval under the National Uniform Licensing Scheme (NULS). According to Mohammed, if immediate action is not taken to address the forgery and misuse of vehicle number plates, the nation’s security could be severely compromised.
