Phuthuma Nhleko, former CEO of MTN Group, passed away on Monday morning following a battle with cancer, according to reports obtained by Naija News.
Nhleko, who served as the CEO of MTN from March 2011 to 2015, resigned amidst the company’s efforts to address a significant fine of ₦1.04 trillion imposed by Nigeria. The fine was levied due to MTN’s failure to disconnect over five million customers with unregistered SIM cards. He had previously held the role of CEO of MTN Nigeria until 2006.
The news of his passing was confirmed by Themba Sibanyoni, a family spokesperson, in a statement released to the media. Sibanyoni described Nhleko as a “titan in the telecommunications industry” whose tenure was characterized by “visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication,” which drove significant advancements within the industry.
Sibanyoni highlighted Nhleko’s broader legacy, noting his advocacy for education and his belief in technology’s power to transform lives. “He left a legacy that extends far beyond the boardroom,” Sibanyoni remarked.
MTN Group also acknowledged the passing of Nhleko with deep sorrow. A senior executive at MTN confirmed the news from the company’s headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa. The executive stated that the MTN community is deeply mourning the loss of Nhleko, acknowledging his continued connection with the company and the impact of his leadership during his tenure.
Nhleko’s passing marks the end of an era for MTN, and his contributions to the telecommunications industry will be remembered by many.
