Fireboy DML’s fourth studio album, Fireboy, has garnered significant attention for its star-studded lineup and deep thematic elements. In a recent interview with Apple Music Africa Now, the award-winning artist delved into his experiences collaborating with music legends such as Lagbaja, Seun Kuti, and Grammy-winning artist Jon Batiste, as well as his vision behind the album.
The album features an impressive roster of collaborators, including the iconic Nigerian music legend Lagbaja, the Grammy-nominated Afrobeat star Seun Kuti, and hitmaker Lojay. Fireboy’s collaboration with Lagbaja on the track ‘Back & Forth’ is particularly noteworthy. The singer shared that Lagbaja, known for his signature mask, wore it throughout the recording session, making for a unique and memorable experience. “It’s crazy—I did not get to see Lagbaja’s face,” Fireboy revealed. “But that’s what makes Lagbaja who he is. In Yoruba, ‘Lagbaja’ means ‘Mr. Nobody,’ so it’s fitting that his face remains unseen. What matters is the music we created together.”
Fireboy expressed deep admiration for Lagbaja and the significance of having him on the album. “That’s a special record. It means a lot to me to have a legend like Lagbaja involved in this project, especially given the nostalgic theme of the album. It’s a tribute to the legends who have shaped African music.”
The collaboration with Seun Kuti was another highlight for Fireboy. He credited Olamide, the A&R and YBNL label leader, for suggesting Kuti’s involvement in the project. “Big shout out to Olamide. When we were working on the song, he suggested, ‘I hear Seun Kuti on this,’ and it instantly clicked. Imagining Seun Kuti in a spotlight with his saxophone made perfect sense,” Fireboy said. He praised Kuti as “an incredible and humorous individual” and described their studio sessions as fun and engaging.
In addition to these collaborations, Fireboy paid homage to Afropop legend Wande Coal with a special track on the album. He recounted recording the song in 2021 at SPINALL’s studio in Lagos, explaining that the beat reminded him of the era when Wande Coal was at his peak. “It felt like a tribute to Wande Coal, a reflection of his influence on me and on African music. The track captures the essence of what Wande Coal was known for in 2015-2016.”
Fireboy’s fourth album is not just a showcase of his growth as an artist but also a tribute to the legends who have shaped African music. “This album is a tribute to all the legends who have influenced African music over the years,” he said. “It’s also a testament to my journey and growth as an artist.”
