CSO Alleges Osun Assembly is Ignoring Petition

A significant disagreement has emerged between The Osun Masterminds, a civil society group, and the leadership of the Osun State House of Assembly regarding the handling of petitions submitted to the legislature. The clash centers on allegations that the House has ignored various demands for accountability.

On Saturday, Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, the Executive Director of The Osun Masterminds, publicly condemned the House of Assembly’s apparent refusal to address petitions. Speaking to journalists in Osogbo, Oyedokun-Alli criticized the legislative body for failing to respond to numerous petitions submitted by both affiliated and non-affiliated groups.

Oyedokun-Alli emphasized that the role of the House of Assembly is to act as a responsive and accountable institution that addresses the concerns and petitions of the public. He expressed strong disapproval of the House’s perceived negligence and called for a renewed commitment to transparency and responsiveness.

“We bemoan and condemn in very strong terms the irresponsibility of the Osun House of Assembly in managing and responding to demands placed on them and petitions written to them,” Oyedokun-Alli stated. He highlighted that the House is expected to uphold high standards of integrity, probity, and accountability, which, according to him, have been lacking.

The group’s grievances also touch on a broader concern about the legislature’s role in ensuring effective governance and public engagement. “The House of Assembly should be a place of support for the people they represent,” Oyedokun-Alli added. “When they ignore calls for accountability and public outcry, it becomes deeply troubling.”

In response to the allegations, the State House of Assembly has yet to provide an official statement or explanation. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions between civil society groups and governmental institutions over issues of transparency and public accountability. The Osun Masterminds have urged the House to fulfill its duty of responding to letters and petitions, emphasizing that no society can prosper under conditions of impunity and disregard for public concerns.
