Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the Kano Emirate Council, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, has commenced the renovation of the Nassarawa mini palace, also known as Gidan Nassarawa. This development follows social media leaks revealing the prototype design of the palace, which has sparked widespread attention.
The move to renovate the mini palace comes after Emir Bayero’s dethronement by Governor Abba Yusuf, which occurred while the Emir was outside the state. The dethronement paved the way for the reinstatement of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who immediately moved into the Kofar-Kudu palace to assume the throne.
Upon his return to Kano, Emir Bayero was compelled to occupy the Nassarawa mini palace, where he continues to carry out his official duties. The renovation project, which appears to be personally funded by the Emir, is seen as a step towards solidifying his position amid the legal and political battles surrounding his emirship.
A source close to the Emir, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the authenticity of the renovation plans, stating, “Since you saw this, it seems to be true, but the Emir is doing this in his capacity and not through the state government. He has already started the renovations within the house.”
Supporters of Emir Bayero have also expressed their backing for the renovation. Ayman Ado, a close ally, posted on Facebook, “Emir Bayero set to renovate Nassarawa Palace. While His Royal Highness the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, accepts the court order of maintaining the status quo in the emirship tussle, he finds it necessary to remodel and facelift the Nassarawa GRA Palace before moving to the main palace of Gidan Rumfa.”
This renovation project comes in the wake of a quick notice issued by the Kano State government, directing Emir Bayero to vacate the Nassarawa mini palace to allow for government-planned renovations. The state government had previously allocated N99.9 million for the renovation of the house, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
As the controversy surrounding the Kano Emirate continues to unfold, Emir Bayero’s efforts to refurbish the Nassarawa mini palace signal his determination to maintain his influence and position within the emirate, despite the ongoing legal and political challenges.
