Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), emphasized the importance of adhering strictly to the electoral timetable for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 2025. During a consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja, Yakubu reminded the parties that their primaries to nominate candidates must take place between March 20 and April 10, 2025.
Yakubu also highlighted the Electoral Act 2022, specifically Section 28(1), which mandates that the notice of election be issued no later than 360 days before the election day. This ensures adequate preparation and a clear timeline for the election process.
In addition to the Anambra election, Yakubu provided updates on other electoral matters, including the 2026 Area Council election for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which is scheduled for February 21, 2026. This follows the expiration of the current tenure of the FCT chairmen and councillors, whose terms end next year.
Yakubu’s statements reflect the ongoing efforts by INEC to maintain a structured and well-organized electoral process in Nigeria, underscoring the importance of following set timelines for the primaries and other elections.
