Afunanya Steps Down as DSS Spokesperson”

The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced the redeployment of its Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Peter Afunanya. Afunanya, who took over from Marilyn Ogar in 2015, will no longer serve as the DSS spokesperson. The details of his new assignment have not been disclosed.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Afunanya bid farewell with a message expressing gratitude for his decade-long service. “Beginnings also end. It’s goodbye. It’s a good night and yet a good morning. I remain a Nigerian with love, loyalty, honour and glory. So help me God,” he said.

The announcement follows the recent appointment of Adeola Ajayi as the new Director General of the DSS. Ajayi, who assumed office last week, has pledged to refocus the agency on covert operations and maintain studied silence on certain matters. He has also committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

In his previous role, Afunanya was instrumental in communicating the agency’s updates and responses. His departure marks a significant change in the DSS’s public relations strategy. The agency’s approach under Ajayi is expected to reflect his emphasis on a more discreet and strategic communication style.
