The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed a fatal accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Danco Filling Station, which occurred around 7:15 a.m. on Sunday. The crash claimed two lives and left five others severely injured.
The accident involved a Toyota Sienna space bus (EPE 430 HT), driven by Adewale Yusuf, and a stationary luxury bus (KTU 835 XY) belonging to Young Shall Grow Transport Company, driven by Chukwudi Ilo from Anambra State. According to police spokesperson CSP Omolola Odutola, the luxury bus had stopped in traffic due to a minor accident ahead when the Sienna, traveling at high speed, lost control and crashed into its rear.
Five passengers from the Sienna sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Live Well Hospital, Sagamu. However, two male passengers, identified as Charles Izuchukwu, a staff member of Babcock University, and another unidentified male, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Their remains were deposited at Last Home Green Mortuary, Sagamu.
The Motor Traffic Department (MTD) responded swiftly, documenting the accident and clearing the wreckage to restore normal traffic. Both vehicles have been towed to the MTD office in Sagamu for further investigation by the Vehicle Inspection Officers.
The police have reiterated that reckless driving, excessive speeding, and negligence are major causes of road accidents. Other contributing factors include driving under the influence, use of expired or substandard tires, and disregard for traffic regulations.
Motorists, particularly commercial drivers, have been urged to drive cautiously, adhere to speed limits, and prioritize passenger safety. The police also warned against substance abuse and emphasized the importance of ensuring vehicle roadworthiness before any journey.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and penalizing violators. The public is encouraged to report reckless drivers and unsafe road conditions to the nearest police station or road safety officers.
