Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, has recently addressed concerns about his statements made during an interview with News Central TV. Obi, who is known for his candid discussions on Nigeria’s political and economic challenges, took to his X handle on Saturday to correct what he described as deliberate distortions of his words.
In the interview, Obi discussed various topics, including his presidential ambitions, the state of the Nigerian economy, and his stance on collaboration with other presidential candidates. He was emphatic about his readiness to work with others who share his vision for Nigeria’s progress, provided their motives were not centered on state capture.
Obi’s recent post addressed specific points of contention. He reiterated his position on not being desperate for the presidency or any political office. He stressed that his focus is on addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues such as hunger, poverty, and insecurity, rather than being preoccupied with the 2027 elections.
“I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV,” Obi stated. “In that interview, I took the opportunity to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.”
He clarified that while he is open to working with other candidates, he emphasized that such collaboration must be driven by a genuine commitment to Nigeria’s development rather than self-serving interests. Obi reiterated his commitment to the Labour Party and emphasized that any future negotiations or alliances should be transparent and focused on the welfare of Nigerians.
Obi also clarified that he never claimed he would accept a vice-presidential position or any similar role, refuting claims to that effect. He reaffirmed his dedication to contributing to Nigeria’s progress in whatever capacity possible, without necessarily holding a formal office.
“My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words,” Obi added. “I have consistently maintained that I am open to working with those committed to building a new Nigeria. My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing.”
The clarification underscores Obi’s continued commitment to addressing Nigeria’s challenges and his willingness to collaborate with others who share his vision for the country’s future.
