A 31-year-old pastor, Oluwasegun Victor, of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ondo State, has been remanded to a Correctional Centre following allegations of impregnating a minor and committing sexual offenses against four other young girls.
Victor, who appeared before an Akure Chief Magistrate Court, faces a one-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse. The charge stems from an incident that occurred on July 24, 2024, in the Oba-Ile area of Akure.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arraigned Victor under Section 31(1) of the Child Rights Law of Ondo State 2007, which prohibits sexual offenses involving minors. The prosecution, led by David Ebriku, argued that the offense is punishable under Section 31(2) of the same law.
The charge against Victor reads: “That you, Olusegun Victor, male, 31 years old, at about 1 pm on the 24th day of July 2024, at No 73 Owode, off Airport Road, Oba-Ile, Akure, within Akure Magisterial district, did commit a felony, to wit, unlawful sexual intercourse on a minor, Miss Precious Olisemeke, 15 years, thereby committing an offense contrary to Section 31(1) of the Child Rights Law of Ondo State 2007 and punishable under Section 31(2) of the same laws.”
The court did not take Victor’s plea as it lacks the jurisdiction to address the case. The prosecutor requested that Victor be remanded to a Correctional Centre, which was granted by the Presiding Magistrate, Taiwo Lebi.
Victor’s defense counsel, Mr. Alex Odunayo Olademehin, requested time to respond to the remand application. The court has adjourned the case to September 19, 2024, for a hearing on the bail application.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about sexual abuse and the protection of minors in the community.
