Seven people have been declared missing following a torrential rainfall that triggered severe flooding in Niger State, affecting communities in Mashegu and Magama local government areas. The downpour, which lasted for nearly 10 hours, resulted in widespread destruction, submerging no fewer than 89 houses and washing away hectares of farmland.
The devastating rainfall struck the region on Friday, leading to severe flooding that has left the affected communities in a state of distress. According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), local divers are actively engaged in search and rescue operations to locate the missing individuals.
“The rainfall was severe and lasted for about 10 hours on Friday, and search and rescue operations are still ongoing in the affected communities,” NSEMA stated. The agency identified Sabon Pegi in Mashegu Local Government and Nassarawa community in Magama Local Government as the most affected areas.
The flooding has prompted NSEMA to renew its appeal to residents living along riverbanks to relocate to higher ground, as more rainfall is expected in the coming days, which could lead to additional flooding. The agency’s warning is in line with earlier predictions from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which had listed Niger State as one of the areas likely to be heavily impacted by flooding this year. NEMA had specifically identified 17 out of the 25 local government areas in the state as high-risk zones.
The recent flooding has exacerbated concerns about the vulnerability of communities in Niger State to extreme weather events. The submersion of homes and the destruction of farmland have not only displaced residents but also threatened their livelihoods. Local authorities and emergency services are working to provide immediate relief to those affected, while also preparing for potential future incidents.
