The local government elections in Kebbi State commenced on Saturday with a peaceful atmosphere and a massive turnout of voters across the 250 political wards in the state. The elections, which involved positions for LG Chairmen and Councillors, started promptly at 8 am, with both accreditation and voting taking place simultaneously in most polling units.
In Argungu, Augie, and Ambursa, the exercise began smoothly, thanks to the early arrival of election materials and officials at the designated polling stations. Voters, eager to participate in the electoral process, were seen queuing up early in the morning to cast their votes.
Reports from various polling units indicate that election materials, security personnel, party agents from the 17 participating political parties, and election monitors were present and actively engaged in overseeing the process. Observations from our correspondent highlighted the significant turnout, particularly among women voters, who formed long queues at several polling units.
In Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, women were observed to outnumber men in most of the polling units visited. Despite a minor delay caused by an early morning downpour in Gotomo and Zauro towns, which postponed the start of voting in some areas until around 9:00 am, the overall process remained orderly. Sensitive election materials had been distributed to the various locations since Friday, ensuring readiness for the election day.
The peaceful conduct of the elections, along with the enthusiastic participation of voters, particularly women, reflects the citizens’ commitment to the democratic process in Kebbi State.
