Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has strongly condemned the anti-Yoruba comments made by a Nigerian-Canadian woman, Amaka Patience Sunnberger. The woman, in a viral audio clip, reportedly made hateful remarks and threats against Nigerians of Yoruba and Bini descent.
In a series of tweets on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi described the comments as an example of bigotry taken too far, emphasizing that such divisive rhetoric should have no place in society and must be rejected by everyone. He urged Nigerians to unite and focus on addressing the country’s shared challenges rather than allowing tribalism and hatred to create further division.
Obi questioned the purpose of tribal bigotry, asking whether it contributes to solving real issues like poverty, food prices, transportation, or electricity supply, to which he asserted that it does not. He called for a shift in focus towards competent leadership that can deliver positive results for all Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic background.
Emphasizing the importance of unity, Obi stated that Nigerians do not care about the ethnicity of those in charge of critical roles, such as pilots or bus drivers, as long as they are competent. He concluded by encouraging Nigerians to reject tribalism and work together to build a prosperous, united, and equitable nation.
