The Katsina State Government is intensifying its efforts to bolster community security in response to escalating attacks by bandits, kidnappers, and other criminals. At a recent Public Engagement and the launch of the 2025 Citizens’ Budget Participation Process and Community Development Programme, Governor Dikko Radda outlined the administration’s new initiatives to enhance local security.
Governor Radda emphasized the need for community involvement in security efforts, stating that the government will support and train local communities to handle criminal threats before security agents can respond. He highlighted the delays in security response times, particularly in remote areas like Tsamiyar-jino, where it can take over two hours for help to arrive.
Radda criticized the current state of security, noting the inadequacy of personnel and resources. He expressed frustration over the inability of communities to effectively defend themselves against small groups of attackers, stating that with proper training and resources, local youths could significantly improve defense against criminals.
In response to these challenges, the state government has established a Community Security Watch Corps, recruiting and training youths from frontline local governments. These recruits are equipped with rifles, bulletproof vests, uniforms, and other essential gear. Additionally, the government has provided 700 motorcycles, 65 Hilux vehicles, and 10 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to enhance mobility and operational capability.
Governor Radda also highlighted investments in surveillance technology, including advanced 5G equipment. He urged residents to actively contribute information to security agencies to enhance safety and security across the state.
