Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has dissolved the caretaker chairmen overseeing all 44 local government areas (LGAs) across the state, with immediate effect. This announcement was made in a statement released by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, on Thursday.
The dissolution comes just a week after the Kano State House of Assembly approved a two-month extension to the chairmen’s tenure, initially set to expire on September 8. Lawmakers had granted the extension to ensure continuity in local governance ahead of the upcoming local government elections, scheduled for October 26, 2024.
Governor Yusuf has directed that all caretaker chairmen, vice chairmen, secretaries, and councillors hand over control of their respective LGAs to their Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs).
“This dissolution applies to all chairmen, vice chairmen, secretaries, and councillors,” Yusuf’s statement confirmed.
Governor Yusuf expressed his appreciation for the efforts and contributions of the outgoing caretaker chairmen toward the development of their local government areas. He also hinted at the possibility of future collaboration with some of them in different capacities.
The move is seen as part of ongoing efforts by the state administration to ensure smooth and effective governance at the grassroots level, as Kano prepares for its local government elections next month.
