Trendinggist Report– The Lagos State Government, through its State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), has reported a staggering 24,955 cases of gender-based sexual violence from 2019 to the present. This alarming figure highlights a significant and concerning trend in sexual violence across the state.
In response to this escalating crisis, the Lagos State Government is launching an extensive advocacy campaign aimed at curbing the rising incidence of sexual violence. The campaign will be rolled out across all local government areas within the state, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing this critical issue through widespread public engagement and education.
The plans were disclosed during a media briefing to mark Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month and an awards ceremony held at Alausa, Ikeja. The event was attended by key figures including the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, and the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi.
Pedro, represented by Acting Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary Hameed Oyenuga, expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of sexual violence affecting both men and women in Lagos. He emphasized that the theme for this year’s awareness campaign, “SGBV – Not On My Watch, SGBV – Not in My Lagos,” underscores the collective responsibility required to combat sexual and gender-based violence effectively.
Pedro articulated, “The theme of this year is based on the compelling need to ensure that Lagosians realize that ending the menace of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence is indeed a collective effort, which requires the support and collaboration of all members of society. We therefore intend to engage all demographics including men, women, and children.”
The campaign will feature a variety of activities designed to raise awareness, educate the public, and foster community involvement in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence. By focusing on collaborative efforts and broad-based engagement, the Lagos State Government aims to create a safer environment for all residents and to address the urgent need for action against sexual violence.
As the state moves forward with its advocacy efforts, it remains committed to working with community partners, stakeholders, and residents to address the growing challenge of sexual violence and to build a more supportive and resilient society.
