UK Defence Minister Strengthens Ties with Nigeria in Fight Against Terrorism
In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, the UK Minister of State for Defence, Lord Vernon Coaker, has reaffirmed the enduring defence partnership between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Speaking during his visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in Maiduguri on Wednesday, Lord Coaker pledged the UK’s unwavering support in combating terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East region.
Accompanied by senior UK officials, Coaker emphasized the significance of the bilateral relationship between both nations in addressing pressing security challenges.
“The Honour Guard’s presence was a deeply moving experience, representing the mutual respect and strong partnership between the Nigerian and British militaries,” Coaker remarked. “His Majesty’s Government sees Nigeria as a vital ally and a leader in West Africa. Together, we uphold democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.”
The Defence Minister reiterated the UK’s commitment to Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, underscoring the shared responsibility of global security.
“Your fight is our fight, and your security is our security,” Coaker stated. “The work being done through Operation Hadin Kai is extraordinary, and we are proud to provide training, expertise, and equipment to support these efforts.”
Highlighting the UK’s contributions, Coaker pointed to counter-improvised explosive device (IED) training, the provision of specialized equipment, and mentorship for the Counter-IED Coordination Cell in the North-East as key areas of support.
Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Theatre Commander of OPHK, lauded the UK’s consistent backing in the fight against insurgency. He described the visit as a reflection of the deep and historic ties between the two nations.
“The UK’s partnership has been pivotal in sustaining our operations and strengthening our capacity to combat terrorism,” Shaibu noted.
The visit not only reinforced the UK’s commitment to Nigeria’s security but also celebrated the shared values and collaboration that continue to define the relationship between these two allies.
