Sokoto State Governor Urges NYSC Members to Foster National Unity
Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has urged corps members assigned to the state by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to actively promote national unity and integration during their service year.
At the swearing-in ceremony for the 2024 Batch C Stream II corps members on Friday, held at the Wamakko Permanent Orientation Camp, the governor, represented by Commissioner for Youth and Sports Mustapha Muhammad, encouraged the corps members to avoid social vices such as cultism, drug abuse, and misconduct.
Governor Aliyu praised the NYSC management for its vital role in shaping and mentoring Nigerian youths in alignment with government policies and programs. He emphasized the scheme’s significant contributions to the nation’s growth across various sectors.
He highlighted the service’s essential function as a unifying force, bringing together youths from diverse ethnic, religious, and academic backgrounds. Aliyu commended the scheme for promoting patriotism, diligence, and hard work, noting its positive impact on socio-economic development through community initiatives.
“I commend you for your commitment to serving our nation. Your patriotic zeal will be remembered in history,” he stated.
Welcoming the corps members to Sokoto State, the “Seat of the Caliphate,” he reminded them that their deployment was divinely ordained. He noted that the three-week orientation would require strength, discipline, tolerance, and sacrifice, laying a solid foundation for their future endeavors.
“The importance of the NYSC in today’s Nigeria cannot be overstated. It is your duty to uphold its noble role in nation-building,” he added.
The governor assured corps members of his administration’s commitment to their safety, calling on security agencies and community leaders to create a supportive environment for them.
He reiterated his administration’s focus on empowering youths through skill acquisition programs, aimed at harnessing their creativity and promoting the state’s economic development.
In his address, NYSC State Coordinator Yakubu Usman encouraged corps members to embrace discipline and adapt to the structured camp lifestyle. He explained that the orientation was designed to prepare them physically and mentally for meaningful contributions to national development.
Usman also urged them to take advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development program, which aims to equip them for self-reliance.
He expressed gratitude to both the governor and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar III, for their steadfast support of the NYSC program.
