A prospective corps member tragically lost her life while en route to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Afikpo, Ebonyi State. The incident occurred on January 22, when a 14-seater bus carrying a group of 12 prospective corps members collided with a truck along the Amasiri-Okigwe route, near Amenu village in Okposi. The deceased, a member of the 2024 Batch C Stream 11, was confirmed dead at King David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), while others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Ebonyi, Mr. Igwe Henry, the crash was allegedly caused by excessive speed on the part of the commercial bus. The victims were rescued by bystanders before FRSC officers arrived at the scene. The preliminary report indicates that the involved vehicles were a grey Toyota commercial bus and a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck. While the exact number of injuries has not been confirmed, the survivors are reported to be in stable condition.
The Ebonyi State NYSC Coordinator, Foluke Oladeinde, visited the injured at the hospital but declined to comment further on the incident at the time, expressing that she was not in the right frame of mind to speak.
