The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has called on the graduating cadets of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to be ready to meet the nation’s expectations and tackle the evolving security challenges facing the country. He delivered this charge during the 2024 ‘Beating of the Retreat’ and Prize Giving Ceremony held at the NDA Parade Ground, Afaka, on Thursday, 18th September.
Addressing the Cadets from the 71 Regular Course and the Direct Short Service Course 28 Army and 32 Air Force, Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized that the nation’s armed forces expect them to not only exhibit bravery on the battlefield but also master modern tools and innovations that are reshaping contemporary warfare. He urged them to rise to the occasion and make a significant impact.
“Considerable resources have been invested in your capacity building and character development,” Air Marshal Abubakar stated, reminding the cadets of the comprehensive military training and solid academic foundation they had received. He encouraged them to show dedication, integrity, and courage as they move forward in their military careers.
“As you prepare to be commissioned as officers, remember that the hopes and aspirations of our country rest on your shoulders,” he said, evoking the famous words of John F. Kennedy by advising, “It is time to ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”
Air Marshal Abubakar further stressed the importance of putting the nation first, urging the cadets to remain loyal to the cause of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting its citizens.
As the ceremony concluded, the CAS expressed confidence that the cadets, soon to become officers, would play an essential role in maintaining peace and security within Nigeria, facing the nation’s challenges with courage and competence.
The event marked the final stage of training for the cadets, who are now set to be commissioned into the Nigerian Armed Forces, where they will serve as part of the country’s defense against both internal and external threats.
