The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Ayomide Adeleye, a 23-year-old suspect accused of abducting Christianah Idowu, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State. Idowu was reportedly kidnapped along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos in August 2024.
Adeleye, who is a 200-level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, was handed over to the police by the Nigerian Army. The arrest followed a growing social media campaign, with netizens demanding swift justice for the abducted student. The hashtag #JusticeForChristianah trended on the social platform X (formerly Twitter), where users called for the immediate prosecution of the suspect.
The social media outcry also brought to light previous allegations against Adeleye. Some users suggested that he might have been involved in the suspicious deaths of his ex-girlfriend in 2018 and his biological sister in 2020, both of which reportedly occurred under similar circumstances.
In response to the public outcry, Lagos State Police Spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin issued a brief statement via X, confirming Adeleye’s arrest. Hundeyin shared an image of the suspect in handcuffs and stated that the arrest was made possible through the cooperation of the Nigerian Army’s 9 Brigade. The handover of Adeleye to the Lagos State Police occurred on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m.
“The 23-year-old suspect has been handed over to the Lagos State Police Command by the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. The investigation into the matter is currently ongoing,” the statement read.
As the police continue their investigation, the public remains eager for updates on the case, which has attracted significant attention and calls for justice from concerned citizens and advocacy groups.
