Governor Mohammed announced on Tuesday night that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will address the leadership crisis by transitioning the role of National Chairman to someone from the North Central zone. This decision follows the removal of Iyorchia Ayu and the current appointment of Umar Damagum, a loyalist of Minister Nyesom Wike, as Acting Chairman.
Governor Mohammed criticized Damagum’s continued role as a “constitutional aberration,” emphasizing that the PDP’s constitution requires vacant leadership positions to be filled by individuals from the region of the previous holder. He indicated that the North Central zone, which previously held the position through Ayu, is entitled to reclaim it to complete his unfinished tenure.
The Governor noted that this type of transition has occurred before, citing the North East’s benefit when Ahmadu Muazu succeeded Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
