General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), former Head of State, expressed his pride in the role his administration played in establishing 26 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria. Speaking at the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) public launch of the book, 100 Years Of Political Parties Evolution In Nigeria (1923 – 2023), on Thursday in Abuja, Abdulsalami emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s political stability and the need to preserve democracy.
He commended IPAC for their political insight in documenting Nigeria’s political evolution, acknowledging that despite past military interventions, democracy has taken root in the country. Abdulsalami noted that 2025 would mark 102 years since the formation of political parties in Nigeria, a milestone in the nation’s democratic journey.
He stated, “This year marks 26 years of unbroken democracy in Nigeria, the longest period of constitutional governance since Independence in 1960.” He highlighted that his government helped lay the foundation for democratic governance, and that patriotic, passionate leadership was essential for the growth of strong democratic institutions.
Abdulsalami further emphasized the importance of nurturing democracy to ensure that civilian rule continues to thrive. He also pointed out that Nigeria’s democracy has withstood numerous challenges, showcasing the resilience and faith of the Nigerian people in representative governance.
He concluded by stressing the need to strengthen political parties, adhere to party manifestoes, and build parties based on ideology to ensure political stability and successful elections in the future. The event was also attended by Yusuf Dantalle, the National Chairman of IPAC, who highlighted the significance of the book launch in commemorating a century of political party activities in Nigeria.
