Mariah Carey Confirms Her Mother and Sister Passed Away on the Same Day Over the Weekend

Mariah Carey has confirmed the heartbreaking news that both her mother, Patricia Carey, and her older sister, Alison Carey, passed away on the same day over the weekend. In a statement to People magazine, Carey expressed her profound sorrow, saying, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

The singer shared her gratitude for being able to spend the last week with her mother before her passing and thanked fans for their support and respect for her privacy during this difficult time. Carey did not provide further details on the causes of her mother’s and sister’s deaths.

Mariah Carey has previously spoken about her complicated relationship with her mother, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Carey described their relationship as a “prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment.” She acknowledged the complexities and emotional conflicts in their relationship, while also expressing deep love and respect.

In her memoir, Carey also reflected on her relationships with her siblings, describing her interactions with them as challenging and suggesting that it was emotionally safer for her to avoid contact at certain times. Despite these complexities, she dedicated a part of her book to her mother, acknowledging her efforts and expressing enduring love.

Carey attended the 2024 Recording Academy honors earlier this year and has been open about her personal struggles and triumphs through her music and writing. HuffPost has reached out to her representatives for more information.
