Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta have started receiving credit alerts for the student loans they applied for through the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), according to the institution’s Rector, Dr. Adeoye Odedeji. This development was announced on Friday during the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected members of the institution’s Students Union Government (SUG).
Loan Distribution and Application Process
Dr. Odedeji revealed that the loans were received by MAPOLY on behalf of the students, aimed specifically at covering their school fees. Despite the availability of this financial aid, the Rector expressed concern over the low number of students who have taken advantage of the opportunity.
The Rector noted that although the institution submitted approximately 11,000 depth data entries to NELFUND, only 81 students registered and applied for the loans. After screening, 26 of these students were deemed qualified. The credit alerts received by Dr. Odedeji on Friday morning confirmed that the school fees for these 26 students for the next academic session have been fully covered.
In addition to the school fees, NELFUND will also provide maintenance allowances directly to the students’ bank accounts in the near future, which will not be channeled through the school.
Call for Increased Student Participation
Dr. Odedeji urged students to seize the opportunity provided by the federal government and apply for the student loans, emphasizing that it was intended to alleviate the financial burden of paying school fees. He lamented that many students had not utilized the loan facility, despite its potential benefits.
Support and Assurance from New SUG Leadership
In his remarks, the newly elected SUG President, Prosper Oladele, assured his fellow students of his commitment to effective representation and addressing their needs without compromise. Oladele’s election marks a new chapter for the SUG, and he pledged to work diligently to support the student body and enhance their overall experience at MAPOLY.
