Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has confirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, will sign the Peace Accord ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election. The decision came after a closed-door meeting with the party’s caucus.
In a statement on Tuesday, Governor Obaseki explained that the PDP, initially threatening to boycott the election, has decided to participate after receiving assurances from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The assurances were aimed at guaranteeing a level playing field for all candidates.
On his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obaseki expressed gratitude to both INEC and the police for their commitment to a fair election. He also emphasized the party’s readiness for the poll, adding that the people of Edo State would make the right choice by voting for the PDP candidates.
Obaseki further noted the party’s hope for the release or granting of bail to detained PDP members in Abuja, which would strengthen their decision to sign the Peace Accord ahead of Saturday’s election.
