FRSC Launches New Mobile App and Crash Reporting System to Enhance Road Safety
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has unveiled a new mobile app and the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS) as part of its efforts to improve road safety and manage road traffic crashes more effectively across Nigeria. The launch took place on Thursday in Abuja.
Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, praised the initiative as a significant advancement for the FRSC and a reflection of ongoing digital transformation efforts. He emphasized that these new tools are designed to increase awareness about road safety and the causes of traffic accidents.
In his remarks, Akume highlighted the pressing need for such innovations. “Data on road traffic crashes reveal that between January and December 2023, road traffic crashes claimed the lives of 5,081 Nigerians, with a total of 31,874 injured during the same period,” he said. He also noted that between January and July 2024, 2,776 people were killed and 16,309 injured as a result of road traffic crashes. These statistics underline the urgent need for more effective measures to address road safety issues.
“The FRSC has made strides in implementing measures against reckless driving and improper road use, but these figures highlight the need for continued efforts from both government and non-governmental stakeholders,” Akume added. He expressed confidence that the new tools will enhance the commitment of vehicle users and traffic law enforcement officers to road safety.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, underscored the importance of the new mobile app and NACRIS as key components of the FRSC’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s digital transformation agenda. “Despite our achievements, there is always room for improvement, especially in this digital age,” Mohammed stated. He emphasized that the FRSC is committed to adapting its operations to current global trends and enhancing its digital capabilities.
The new mobile app will feature alerts for speeding, dangerous driving, and vehicle document verification. NACRIS, on the other hand, will focus on crash reporting and data management. “The proper application of these features is expected to significantly reduce injuries and fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes,” Mohammed said.
He also highlighted that NACRIS will promote a multi-sectoral approach to crash reporting and data storage, ensuring that accurate and reliable data is used for effective policy implementation and resource allocation.
The Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, Abiodun Adesida, commended the FRSC’s leadership and the new technologies. He noted that the app provides real-time traffic updates and accident alerts, which are crucial for safer driving practices. Adesida also mentioned ongoing efforts to amend the FRSC Act to modernize and enhance the organization’s capabilities.
The introduction of these tools marks a significant step towards improving road safety management in Nigeria, aligning with the broader goals of digital transformation and enhanced economic growth.
