Nigerian singer, songwriter, and performer Adedamola Adefolahan, known professionally as Fireboy DML, recently shared insights into his latest album, Adedamola, during an interview with Apple Music Africa Now’s South African media personality Nandi Madida.
Fireboy DML, who has just released his fourth studio album, features a range of prominent artists, including the legendary Nigerian Afrobeat and Traditional Folk musician Lagbaja, American Grammy-winning singer Jon Batiste, Afrobeat veteran Seun Kuti, Afrobeats star Lojay, and award-winning Nigerian DJ Spinall. The album, consisting of 14 tracks, also includes a notable tribute to Nigerian Afropop star Wande Coal.
In the interview, Fireboy revealed the inspiration behind the song titled “Wande’s Bop.” This track, co-produced by DJ Spinall and Semzi, is a standout on the album. Fireboy explained that the song was a homage to Wande Coal, whom he and many contemporary Afropop and Afrobeats artists—including Wizkid, Oxlade, and Joeboy—consider a foundational influence in the genre.
Fireboy’s decision to mirror Wande Coal in “Wande’s Bop” reflects his deep respect for the pioneering artist’s impact on modern Afropop and Afrobeats. The song serves as a nod to Coal’s enduring influence and celebrates his contributions to the genre, acknowledging him as a significant source of inspiration for new-age artists.
