The Federal Government of Nigeria has deployed experts and resources to Borno State to address the post-flood impacts affecting the region, according to a statement by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal. The response includes sending specialists from various departments and agencies under the ministry to provide immediate relief and prevent further environmental and health hazards.
As part of the efforts, the government will distribute around 3,000 informational flyers to educate residents on best practices during the flood crisis. The ministry’s teams are tasked with continuous water sampling to monitor quality and detect hazardous chemicals, aiming to prevent waterborne diseases like cholera. Additionally, 100 drums of chlorine have been sent to disinfect water sources.
Beyond the immediate relief, the government plans to work with Borno State on long-term strategies for flood mitigation and early warning systems to avoid future occurrences. The Federal Government also intends to collaborate with international partners to strengthen the state’s disaster risk management and climate adaptation capacities. Minister Lawal commended Governor Babagana Zulum for his proactive leadership in mobilizing resources and ensuring the safety of affected communities.
