The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified efforts to combat drug and substance abuse among youths. On Saturday, the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim, emphasized the dangers of illicit drugs and urged young people to avoid them. The warning came at the conclusion of a two-day sensitization event in Ado-Ekiti, aimed at addressing drug abuse issues in the southern zone of the country.
Dr. Ibrahim, represented by Alhaji Alu Mohammed, highlighted the government’s renewed commitment to eradicating drug problems in line with United Nations’ guidelines. The event focused on educating young people about the health risks associated with drug abuse, evidence-based prevention strategies, and treatment options.
Recent studies have shown a concerning rise in drug abuse among youths, driven by various social factors such as peer pressure and negative influences. The government aims to tackle these issues by collaborating with state governments and other stakeholders.
Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth Development, Adeola Adebayo, expressed gratitude for hosting the event and pledged the state’s support in combating drug abuse. The conference saw the participation of over 100 individuals and included a road-show to raise awareness about drug addiction through the distribution of informational fliers.
This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to fostering a drug-free society and addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse among young Nigerians.
